LA 405 Architecture Drive 12 stops by car, Sepulveda Pass to the 10
Map is offline right now — the tour below still works. Narration plays itself as you reach each stop.

A self-guided drive south on the I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass and West Los Angeles — the single most congested stretch of freeway in America — and an answer to the question everyone stuck in that traffic has asked: what is that building on the hill? what are those twin towers? why is there a giant white temple right there? From the flood-control dam that tamed the Valley, over the Mulholland bridge they tore down for "Carmageddon," past Richard Meier's travertine Getty on its ridge, down through Westwood and the Wilshire condo canyon, by the Century City towers that rose on a dead movie studio's backlot and the white spire of the Los Angeles Temple — eleven miles that read, building by building, as a cross-section of how the Westside chose to build. Paced for moving traffic; audio-first for the driver, look-first for the passenger.

The route, in order

  1. Intro — Into the Sepulveda Pass The busiest freeway in America, about to drop through the one low gap in the mountains — eyes on the road; let this ride shotgun.
  2. Sepulveda Dam & the Basin The dry dam that holds back the Los Angeles River — and the gorge they cut to let the freeway through the hills.
  3. The 101/405 Interchange Ranked the most congested interchange in the nation — the gateway where the climb into the pass begins.
  4. Mulholland Bridge & "Carmageddon" The bridge they tore down in a weekend — and the gridlock apocalypse that never came.
  5. Skirball Cultural Center Moshe Safdie's stone galleries in the pass — and a 400-animal ark hidden inside.
  6. The Getty Center A million square feet of Italian travertine on a ridge — reached by a driverless tram, the single greatest building on the freeway.
  7. Sunset Blvd & Bel-Air The gated enclave Sunset Boulevard runs into — and the canyon hills where LA keeps its money.
  8. UCLA & Westwood Royce Hall's Romanesque arches, a 17-storey federal tower, and the old soldiers' home the city grew around.
  9. Wilshire "Condo Canyon" A mile of residential high-rises down one boulevard — the Westside's wall of towers.
  10. Century City & the LA Country Club A city built on a dead movie studio's backlot — twin towers by the architect of the World Trade Center, and Die Hard's Nakatomi Plaza.
  11. Los Angeles California Temple 257 feet of white and a gold angel — the landmark spire you can see for miles from the lanes.
  12. Outro — The 10 Interchange Where the pass tour ends — a three-level interchange, and the first in California designed by a woman.
